Dry Skin: Skin Care Routine and Moisturizers to use

When you have dry, flaky, and itchy skin, all you want is relief from the pain. How do you soothe dry skin? What's the best skincare routine for you? If you think hydration equals washing and bathing more, you might want to step away from the shower.

Before you build your step-by-step skin care routine, it's important to identify skin care mistakes you might be committing. Here are some of the things you might be doing that’s causing your skin to get even drier.

1) You’re washing too much.

If you think that water is equivalent to hydration, you’re mistaken. Bathing or washing your face too much can actually strip your skin of its natural oils causing it to dry out even more.

What you should be doing:

Skip the cleanser in the morning and just rinse off with water. You can reserve your cleansing for your night time skincare routine.

2) You’re piling on too much product.

A proper skincare routine order is important but if you’re putting ontoo many products, they may be doing more harm than good.

What you should be doing:

Stick with products that not only seal in moisture, but also absorb easily into the skin.

When in doubt, go back to the basics and start simple:

  1. stick to a gentle cleanser that's free of harsh chemicals,
  2. make sure you rinse with warm water to keep your skin from drying out, and
  3. pick products that are targeted for bringing back and sealing in hydration.

3) Your water is too hot.

Hot showers are great especially on cool mornings, but dial it down a little. Warm water is better because hot water can cause irritation and inflammation.

What you should be doing:

Keep your shower short and make sure to be gentle when drying off — just carefully pat yourself dry with a towel (especially on your face). When washing your face, steer clear of hot water, too.Your cleanser is too harsh.

Fragrance, alcohol, and other harsh chemicals can irritate your skin more than care for it.

What you should be doing:

Go with an oil-based cleanser that’s free of fragrance. Look for products that seal in the moisture and don’t strip your skin of its natural oils. You don’t want your cleansing to be the cause of dry patches on your face, right?
